The Chilton County Extension Office will host a pair of Alabama 4-H summer camps in the coming weeks.

A 4-H Beginners Sewing Camp will take place June 27-28, while the Chef 4-H Cooking Camp is scheduled for July 20-21.

Both camps will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

The sewing camp is designed to teach 4-Hers the basics of sewing by hand and with a machine.

Participants will make their own pieces and complete two projects, which they will be able to take home.

In a similar fashion, the cooking camp will focus on getting kids involved in a hands-on way of learning.

Pam Ousley, with the extension office helped in the planning process of both camps.

According to Ousley, the camps have been three days in the past, but were shortened this year.

Paula Blevins-Russell and Tresia Bennett will assist in instructing the sewing camp.

Learning how to cook is not the only thing on the menu during the cooking camp, as the kids will also learn about proper food safety, kitchen safety when preparing certain dishes.

Quick and easy breakfast foods and nutritious snacks will be included as some of the specific dishes prepared.

“It [breakfast] is just such an important meal of the day,” Ousley said.

Throughout the school year the Chilton County Extension Office is the site of Alabama 4-H sewing and cooking clubs that meet monthly.

The Chef 4-H club recently began being offered within the past year.

Ousley hopes that the introduction of the club will help carry over into related interest in the cooking camp.

“My job is to help build up these two clubs,” Ousley said. “We’re trying to get new kids involved that haven’t participated in the past.”

A $10 registration fee is required for the sewing camp, while the cooking camp is free.

However, signup for 4-H is required for both camps by visiting Alabama4H.com and then completing the registration process by calling the Chilton County Extension Office at (205) 280-6268.

Deadline to signup for the sewing camp has passed, while the cooking camp is July 13 and space is limited.
