Thorsby High School hosted its annual summer volleyball camp on Monday and Tuesday.

The camp was held two days for six hours per day. Head coach Leighsa Robinson has put on the camp every year since she started coaching, which includes a 12-year stint at Jemison before coming to Thorsby full time last season.

Judy Green instructed the camp and has done so every year. She is a veteran of the game having coached at the University of Alabama from 1996 to 2010 and the University of Montevallo from 1986 to 1995.

“Judy has been doing my camp since I began coaching volleyball,” Robinson said.

A lot was covered during the two-day span. Because volleyball is a fall sport, school will start shortly before the volleyball season. This places even more emphasis on preparation throughout the summer months.

“This is a skills camp,” Robinson said. “We bring in these former college players and it really helps them to improve.”

There are few breaks in volleyball, as the game often has a pace of play that is very constant.

“We have to be in good shape, because volleyball can be very rigorous,” Robinson said.

It was an excellent turnout for the camp, as 22 of the 26 players that make up the Thorsby varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams were on hand.

“It’s a good number,” Robinson said. “They’ve hustled and are intent on learning.”

According to Robinson, the players give up lake time and other summer activities to participate in the camp.

“That just shows their commitment to this program,” Robinson said.

The camp stressed fundamentals such as passing and communication. Scoring points is the goal of every team and the camp taught the process of creating those scoring chances.

“In volleyball passing is probably the most important thing that you do,” Robinson said. “If you can’t pass, you can’t play.”

Peach Park donated lunch for the coaches, as well as watermelons for a delicious summer snack for the players.
