Storms on the evening of May 3 downed trees and took down power lines around Clanton.

An oak tree that was reportedly 100 years old fell on Fifth Avenue in Clanton, breaking a utility pole, the attached transformer and a water meter.

Another tree fell near First United Methodist Church, blocking Ninth Street North and taking down some power lines.

A third tree fell into the side of an apartment unit at Rolling Oaks Apartments.

City worker Tim Martin said there were other downed trees across the city and that workers were very busy on the morning of May 4 trying to remove the trees and repair damages. Martin was working on the tree at Fifth Avenue at about 9 a.m. on May 4.

“There’s a lot of work to do,” Martin said. “We’ve already cleared one tree from the railroad tracks near Independent Fence.”

Crews were present at multiple sites on the morning of May 4 removing debris.

Power company workers and phone service workers were surveying the damages to downed lines and preparing to move in when the trees are cleared to begin repairs and restore services to the affected areas.
