Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation are investigating an officer-involved shooting involving Chilton County deputies.

The agency is investigating at the request of the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office and Chilton County District Attorney.

According to CJ Robinson of the DA’s office, the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. on March 25 when a deputy from the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the rest area on Interstate 65 near mile marker 214. The officer was responding to a call that expressed concern about a reportedly intoxicated person. When he approached the suspect, the suspect reportedly showed a gun. The officer fired shots and injured the subject, who was taken to UAB hospital.

“Nothing would have made me happier than if it was just a stop to see if someone were intoxicated or not,” Robinson said. “But when you pull a gun on police, it changes everything.”

The investigation is ongoing. Robinson said he anticipates the CCSO will press charges on the suspect for attempted murder if the suspect is released from the hospital.
