Isabella and Thorsby played another intense girls basketball game on Jan. 27, as the Mustangs defeated Thorsby 42-32 on senior night for the Rebels.
The game evolved into a defensive slugfest where points were hard to come by and both offenses were forced to take their time and show patience.
“It was a different game than we normally play, because the pace was slowed down,” Isabella head coach Jared Day said. “We were still able to get some good shots out of half court offense.”
Adding to the difficulty for Isabella was the fact that Synia Chattman, one of the Mustangs’ primary scorers, battled foul trouble throughout and fouled out with 5:36 to play in the game.
“She probably played five minutes, but others stepped up,” Day said.
Helping fill the void was fellow guard Kiara Ford, who helped lead Isabella during a second half takeover. She drained a 3-pointer and several clutch free throws down the stretch.
Thorsby led 21-17 at the half, but saw the advantage quickly disappear, as the Rebels managed only one point in the third quarter and trailed by five points entering the fourth quarter.
“We played really good defense to hold them to 32 points with the players that they’ve got,” Day said. “They got us out of our game plan, but we did what we had to do to win in the end.”
The high school careers of Lily Barnett, Lauren Wyatt, Kerri Robinson and Taylor Hayes were remembered during a senior night ceremony after the game.
“It’s sad that it’s my last game, but it’s great to share it with my teammates,” Hayes said. “It will be amazing to come back and share in the memories.”
Kerri Robinson and Barnett each surpassed 1,000 points for their career and were presented with their favorite practice ball by Thorsby head coach Leighsa Robinson as a memento.
Ford led all scorers and matched her jersey number with a 24-point performance. Chattman finished with 14 points in limited minutes.
Barnett led Thorsby with 15 points, while Kerri Robinson added seven to the score sheet.
