It is never too early to start thinking about college, especially for fourth graders at Thorsby High School who recently participated in the College Counts Smart Art Contest.

The statewide contest required students to draw a two-dimensional picture showing what they want to be when they grow up, while also describing what they want to do upon completion of college in 50 words or less.

Lacey Jennings was chosen as the winner of the contest by a panel of judges at Thorsby, who looked at a combination of creativity for both the artwork and the narrative.

“I was shocked at first, but I have always liked to draw,” Jennings said.

She drew a depiction of her as a nurse taking care of patients.

“I like taking care of people and making them feel better,” Jennings said.

Jennings’ drawing was submitted to the Alabama State Department of Education where she will represent Thorsby at the state level of competition.

While many contests ask for either a drawing or an essay, the College Counts Smart Art Contest was designed to find a well-rounded student that excels at each aspect. The narrative had to accurately explain the picture.

According to school counselor Kristie Hardy, the idea behind the contest was to raise awareness for college and to get students thinking about possible interests that can turn into a career.

The state winner of the competition will be announced in late January 2017.

If Jennings wins, she will be awarded a grand prize of $529 that would be put in an account to be saved and one day be used toward paying for college.
