The newest group of Chilton County Commissioners took part in their first meeting on Wednesday morning, which was preceded by each member of the Commission being sworn in.

The newest additions to the Commission include Steve Langston and Matt Mims.

One of the first decisions that the group made was a unanimous choice for Allen Caton to be chairman. Joseph Parnell was chosen as vice chairman.

According to Caton, it is the first time that a chairman has had the opportunity to serve for five consecutive years.

“Thank you for your trust in me,” Caton said to his fellow Commissioners.

Christy Hyche of the Chilton County Humane Society came before the Commission to discuss its current financial situation.

According to Hyche, the Humane Society is $20,000 in debt and the [county-leased] building is in major need of upgrades.

She explained how is costs $37 to place an animal in the shelter. The cost includes providing vaccinations, housing and other necessities.

The Humane Society had 82 animals last month from the county alone. Due to this, they asked if the current 25 cents surcharge to $1.

Caton advised his fellow Commissioners to consider a work session to further discuss the financial matters, because there is a lot that goes into the process.

County Engineer Tony Wearren recommended reducing the posted speed limit on County Road 570 near Verbena High School from 45 mph to 20 mph.

His reasoning behind the recommendation was due to the roads being narrow and school traffic within a high residential area.

The Commission approved the reduction, but gave a three-day transition period from when the sign was posted so that drivers could adjust.

A work session will be held one hour prior to the next meeting to decide the duties of the Commission and which departments certain commissioners will be liaisons for.

“I’m excited about the next four years, because we’ve made some great progress,” Parnell said.

In other news from the meeting, the Council:
