MAPLESVILLE — A familiar face returned to the Maplesville Town Council Monday as Hal Harrison was sworn in for the Third District seat.

Harrison had formerly served on the council from 2012 to 2015. He resigned the position when he moved out of the district he was representing.

“[I] look forward to the opportunity to serve again,” Harrison said.

Returning councilmen included Shelia Hailger, Sheila Hall, Richard Davis and Patty Crocker.

“We want to thank everyone who ran and we are looking for a good four years,” Mayor W.C. Hayes Jr. said.

According to the Maplesville town website, “Only one candidate qualified for mayor and in each council district, so the Town of Maplesville did not have a Municipal Election.”

Each councilperson said they wanted to help the town by serving on the council.

Davis said he had initially thought he would only serve one term, but changed his mind when many in the community asked him to serve again.

Haigler and Hayes have been a part of Maplesville town leadership for a number of years.

As Hayes starts his fourth term, he wants to see the town improve. He said he was “trying to get sewer to West Fraser” and hopes to have every street in the town repaved.

“We want to do everything we can to help and help the town,” Hayes said.

During the meeting, Crocker was selected as the mayor pro tem for a one-year term. The council appointed Dawn Smitherman to remain town clerk, John Hollis Jackson III to remain town attorney, Amanda Baxley to remain judge and Fletcher Green to remain the town prosecutor.

The mayor postponed appointing the police and fire chiefs, saying he wanted time to talk to some people about the positions.

Maplesville Town Council’s next meeting will be Monday at 6 p.m. at 9400 Al Hwy 22.
