Nelson holds final meeting as mayor

Jean Nelson took part in her final Town Council meeting as Thorsby mayor on Monday.

“She’s taken on everything that’s she’s been offered and worked hard every step of the way,” Councilman Glenn Littleton said.

Prior to being elected mayor in 2012, Nelson was a member of the Town Council since 1996.

Councilman Neil Benson has worked with Nelson during their time together on the Council and Nelson’s stint as mayor.

“I appreciate all that she’s down for this town and its people,” Benson said.

Robert Hight will be sworn in as the new mayor during a ceremony at Helen Jenkins Chapel prior to the next Council meeting on Nov. 7.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with several good people,” Nelson said. “It’s been a good four years.”

In other news from the meeting, the Council:

  • Approved to pay for Billy Wyatt’s water and waste license.
  • The fire department started the application process for new grants, but have not yet put in for any.
  • Approved to pay the town’s bills.
  • Approved the minutes from the previous meeting.
