Dorothy Nell “Dot” Cole

Dorothy (Dot) was born in Gorgas on Aug. 5, 1929, while her dad, a carpenter, worked on the power plant or dam nearby. They also lived at Fontana Dam while her dad helped build it during WWII. She graduated from Jemison High in about 1947.

She married Edward Lee Cole, Jr. in 1954. To gain their independence from family, they immediately moved to Seattle, Washington, where they lived for about a year. They moved closer to family for the birth of their first son, Curtis Lee, in 1955.

After the birth of their second son, Randall Len, in 1958, and moving around some more, they settled in Atlanta, Ga., in 1965. Upon Ed’s retirement in about 1990, they moved to the family land in the Clanton area.

Dot contributed to her community mostly through her church, Mineral Springs Baptist. She also was a substitute teacher at Jemison in 1969-1970. Always sewing something, she made outfits for local cheerleaders, and in her later years she made baby clothes and donated them to mothers of stillborn children.

She was a member of Eastern Star for about 15 years. A cancer survivor until late, she was involved in Relay For Life. She loved children and often babysat for nieces and nephews. She dearly loved her family and took great care of them.

Dot passed away on Friday, Sept. 23.

Dot was the first-born of Euell Curtis Robinson and Gurtys Gore. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; son, Randy; and her brothers, Joe Douglas and Charles Curtis.

She is survived by her son, Curtis Lee (Irene) Cole; sisters, Eva Grace Billingsley and Susie Williams.

The family thanks all those who gave of their time to help Dot have such a wonderful life. Our thanks to Southern Care Hospice of Clanton, including Anita, Debra and Pam, for making her last month as well as could be expected.
