Thorsby High School welcomed back alumni during homecoming on Friday. However, the halftime festivities proved to be one of the few bright spots, as the Rebels lost 58-7 to the Central Coosa Cougars.

Things started off with a bang as Christin Brown pounced on a fumble and set the Rebels up at the Central Coosa 1-yard line.

Brown finished what he started and dove into the end zone for a touchdown to give Thorsby an early 7-0 lead.

The Rebels were held scoreless throughout the rest of the game, as the offense struggled to develop any kind of consistent rhythm.

Defensively, it was a Jekyll-and-Hyde performance as Thorsby produced five turnovers but also surrendered its share of big plays and quick scores.

“We’re just limited speed wise,” Thorsby head coach Billy Jackson said. “We’re already short-handed and once we start getting some injuries, it doesn’t help.”

Chase Merrell recovered a pair of fumbles, while senior Noah Byrd also recovered one to accompany Brown’s.

Another senior came up big, when Colton Caton intercepted a pass at the Rebels 1-yard line and helped deny Central Coosa another score.

Thorsby welcomes a much-needed bye in order to heal and press the reset button on their mental focus.

“We’re young and growing pains happen,” Jackson said. “The sun will come up tomorrow, and the only thing we can do is continue to try to get better.”
