In a game where both teams entered averaging around 50 points per game, the Isabella Mustangs (3-0, 1-0) provided all the scoring en route to a 73-0 blowout victory over region opponent Autaugaville.

“They have some explosive players and we wanted to make sure that we were ready to play at a high level,” Isabella head coach Tate Leonard said.

The home crowd had plenty to cheer about as the Mustangs scored at a frantic pace to start the game.

Isabella scored a pair of touchdown on its first two offensive plays from scrimmage.

Jordan Campbell opened the game by taking an end around 39 yards for a touchdown and Austin Brasher followed it up with 15-yard touchdown run after a Hunter Langston punt return set up the Mustangs deep in Autaugaville territory.

After a quick three-and-out, Langston displayed his skills in the open field once again with a 40-yard punt return for a score to extend Isabella’s lead 21-0.

“We’ve put ourselves in a hole every game, so it was big for us to start off with some higher intensity,” Leonard said. “We got the momentum and never gave it up.”

Isabella’s first three plays of the game with the ball in their hands resulted in touchdowns. The trend of quick scoring drives continued throughout the game.

Cornelius Stacy pounced on an Autaugaville fumble at the goal line and then showed his versatility as a two-way player by turning on the afterburners for a 93-yard touchdown run just two plays later.

The lead continued to grow as the game wore on, as the Mustangs led 56-0 at halftime and was able to maintain the shutout.

“This group of guys has just bonded,” Isabella senior offensive lineman Devon Headley said. “That is a big reason why we’ve gotten better.”

The defense smothered Autaugaville’s dual-threat quarterback with a relentless pass rush and an instinctive secondary that picked off two passes.

C.J. LeCroy and Tyler Durham each had an interception in the game, as Durham returned his for a touchdown.

“We’ve just got to keep getting better and make sure that we don’t get complacent,” Leonard said.
