LeCroy Career Technical Center is having its annual college and career fair Sept. 7 at the Jefferson State Community College Performing Arts Center in Clanton.

An estimated 600 seniors from Chilton County schools will come hear from Superintendent Tommy Glasscock and then have a chance to meet representatives from more than 40 colleges and 13 companies to discuss opportunities after graduation.

Kim Benson, career coach at LeCroy Tech, said there will be large universities as well as community colleges at the event, in addition to a variety of companies interested in hiring recent graduates.

“Students have different paths,” said Benson. “We try to have a little bit for everyone.”

Students will learn how to apply for jobs with the companies that are present at the event. They will also be able to talk to college representatives and learn about admissions, financial aid and college life in general.

Benson said that many students do not know much about life after graduation. They often graduate lacking basic knowledge related to job searching or applying for universities.

“It’s a good time to give them more information all at once about what their opportunities are after graduation,” said Benson. “Our goal is to have every student college and career ready.”

The preparation doesn’t end at the career fair. LeCroy Tech will hand out a schedule of events that are designed to inform students and train them to take advantage of opportunities after graduation, according to Benson. One such event will be a session about financial aid, where students will learn the ins and outs of applying for help to pay for college.
