New campground and RV center coming to Clanton

Plans are in the works for a new campground to soon open in Chilton County at the site of the former Dandy RV Sales & Service and KOA Campground off Interstate 65 in Clanton.

Andrew Cooley bought the property and will name it Yellowhammer RV Campground.

After spending 18 years in and around RV’s with the family RV business, it did not take him long to realize that he felt right at home.

Cooley’s grandfather sold campers in Sylacauga and even has relation selling RV’s in Florida.

“Whoever you go camping with and no matter whether its sunny or raining out, you will get to know that person,” Cooley said.

Yellowhammer will serve dual purposes, as a campground and a service and sales center. Travel trailers will be the primary form of RV sold at the facility.

The front of property will hold the travel trailers and the service center, while the back portion will contain a Good Sam Campground with 50 sites that include full hookup, such as water, sewer, 50 amp electricity, free wifi and cable.

“I wouldn’t sell anybody something that I wouldn’t buy myself,” Cooley said.

The campground portion is scheduled to open Sept. 1, but the details are still being finalized in regards to the service center.

Despite growing up in Birmingham, Cooley was originally from Trussville and said that Clanton reminds him a lot of his time as a kid.

“When you’re camping, it’s like you go back in time,” Cooley said. “It feels like the America that I grew up with.”

What Cooley hopes helps him separate from other dealers is that he is a camper himself and enjoys taking the family out as often as possible.

“I’ve learned efficient ways to help you through certain situations,” Cooley said. “You don’t learn those methods unless you actually go camping.”
