Thorsby Council hopes new stop signs lead to safer intersection

The town of Thorsby installed bigger and better stop signs in the latest attempt to a higher awareness of safety at the intersection of Alabama Avenue and Franklin Street.

According to Thorsby Police Chief Rodney Barnett, the intersection’s proximity to Thorsby School and Richard Wood Park make it even more of a safety concern for the community.

“It is probably the most abused intersection in Thorsby,” Barnett said.

Barnett informed the Town Council during its meeting on Monday that the funding for the stop signs was brought forth by an anonymous donor.

The signs are larger than the previous and have been moved up higher on the pole for clear visibility.

The police department has been aware of the problem, and is hoping that the stop signs are the solution that sticks.

“There’s no magic number of tickets that will solve it,” Barnett said. “It’s been a burden on my heart.”

Gary Moon with the Thorsby Football Booster Club came before the Council asking if it would interested in sponsoring three holes in the annual golf tournament fundraiser, as well as a full-page ad in this year’s football program.

According to Moon, the golf tournament is one of the more anticipated fundraisers that the club puts on, and the proceeds will also benefit improvements to other athletics facilities and are not exclusive to football.

After some consideration, the Council agreed to sponsor the golf holes and a full-page ad for a total cost of $900.

In other news from the meeting, the Council:

•Agreed to pay $250 to get individual trophies for each of the five girls from Thorsby that were members of the North Chilton 6U softball team that finished third in the world series.

•Agreed to dissolve industrial board that was created by the town in the 1970s.

•Approved renewing agreement with RDS to assist in tax revenue.
