Independence Day and fireworks go together more than just about anything else in American culture.

This year, several shows will take place throughout the county allowing for a view of a spectacle no matter where residents live in the area.

Clanton continues its fireworks tradition that has been going strong for the past 30 years.

“It’s hard to believe it has been going on for that long, but it is something that the people really want to be a part of,” Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver said.

The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. at Clanton City Park on July 4, which falls on a Monday this year.

According to Driver, the fireworks will be set up between field No. 3 and the football field, and the show will last about 30 minutes from start to finish.

“We’ve added some big ones this year,” Driver said. “People tend to like the ones that rattle the windows and shake the ground.”

Maplesville is looking to build its own tradition with a fireworks display for the second straight year at Community Park at the Single Ball Field located at 301 Shanks Drive.

James Smith, with Blackbelt Sewer and Drain Cleaning and Maplesville Athletic Club President, leads the July 4 efforts with support from the town.

According to Maplesville Town Clerk Dawn Smitherman, the show will begin between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., but can vary depending on how early or late it gets dark.

A waterfront fireworks show will be held at Lake Mitchell and presented by the HOBO Association.

According to HOBO area representative Peggy Bullard, the event has previously been held in the front yard of Jim McCormick, but will now move across Cargile Creek.

“Over the years, various marinas have begun taking up donations,” Bullard said. “It promises to be even bigger and better this year.”

The fireworks will be synchronized to music and are scheduled for July 3 at 9 p.m.

According to Bullard, about 200 boats invade the creek to catch a glimpse of the show each year.

The town of Thorsby will hold it’s annual Independence Day celebration on June 29 beginning at 7 p.m. at Richard Wood Park.

Some of the festivities will include an ice cream contest, music, prayers and a fireworks show to follow.

The one thing that each of the shows are hoping for is that Mother Nature cooperates with the plan, and it does not rain on the festivities.

“We just pray that it doesn’t rain,” Driver said.
