The Jemison Library’s summer reading program offers kids the opportunity to “Journey Through Jemison” over the next couple of months.

The program consisted of several scheduled field trips to various businesses and jobs performed on a daily basis within the Jemison community.

According to Jemison librarian Tammie McGriff, kids are not necessarily worried about where they go, as long as they are out doing something.

“I know what to expect from the kids, because I used to teach kindergarten,” McGriff said.

The first trip was to Regions Bank on June 1 and was followed by another to the Jemison Fire Department on June 8.

A dozen trips make up the schedule, which means those involved are in for busy and informative summer months.

Each trip and meeting time is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Wednesday until July 27.

The most jam-packed week will be June 20 to June 23, which will include four consecutive days of “journeying through Jemison.”

Upcoming events include trips to Blue Bonnet Vet on June 21 and the Auburn Research and Extension Center to see Jim Pitts on July 13.

Also included are visits in the City Hall’s auditorium from Hayes Drug on June 20, optometrist Dr. Lisa Green on June 22, Jemison Got Talent winner Zack Williams on June 23, chiropractor Dr. Matt Mims on June 29.

Plans for a future visit to the Jemison Police Department and Post Office are possible future destinations later this summer.

About 20 to 25 kids attend the program’s events each week and range from 2 to 11 years old.

“It helps them to interact and make new friends,” McGriff said. “In this type of setting, they learn no matter what age they are.”

No registration is required, and kids and parents are welcome to attend from throughout Jemison.

The Jemison Library is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and closed from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for lunch.
