Morris Price has been an influential figure as chairman of the Memorial Day program for the past 30 years, and recently held that position for the final time.

As appreciation for his service with the program, Price, 88, was presented with a plaque that acknowledges his commitment to Chilton County.

Price came up with the idea for the monument that sits outside the courthouse in 1984, while an acting member in the American Legion Post 206 in Thorsby.

According to Price, at the time, the veterans of the Vietnam War were the only ones being recognized outside of the courthouse.

“I didn’t ask for anything special,” Price said. “I just thought that everyone should be represented.”

Price formed a committee to begin raising money for the new monument, and two years later enough resources were raised.

“There was a lot of research and time put forth by many people,” Price said.

The veterans’ monument was officially dedicated on Memorial Day in 1986.

“We set up the parameters of the program that we continue to follow to this day,” Price said. “We haven’t missed a year since.”

Price lost one of his three brothers that fought during World War II.

“He had a son that he never got to see,” Price said. “I was proud to get those recognized on a permanent fixture before they were forgotten.”

Price also served his country in the Army during the Korean War, where he spent two years as a prisoner of war.

Six of the names listed on the memorial monument attended Mt. Pleasant School in Chilton County along with Price growing up.

“The freedoms and good lives that we enjoy didn’t come cheap,” Price said. “We can’t dwell on the past, but we need to take care of the things that we cherish.”

Jerry Grooms was named the next chairman of the Memorial Day committee.

“I’m sure they will proudly carry on our annual tradition,” Price said.
