The Chilton County High School boys golf team played some of its best golf of the year en route to qualifying for the Class 6A State Golf Championship.

In the sub-state tournament, the Tigers finished in second place with a combined score of 322 at Timbercreek Golf Club in Mobile on Monday.

Trey Baker led the way with a team-low of 75, while Cole Headley shot 78, Boyd Price shot 83, Cole Watley shot 86 and Bailey Price shot 87.

“Everybody shot good on the front nine, which allowed them to maintain with pars on the back nine,” Chilton County head coach Ryan Price said.

According to Price, Baker hit a second shot from about 160 yards that rolled in for an eagle and he sat at 3-under through five holes.

“These guys have stuck together,” Price said. “I just loved seeing the high fives and bear hugs coming off the 18th hole.”

The top two teams advanced to the state championship. Spanish Fort finished atop the eight-team field with a combined score of 284.

Chilton County bounced back during the sub-state competition after surviving a rash of uncharacteristic scores during sectionals.

“We had a team meeting during the week and literally buried our scores from the week before,” Price said. “We just wanted to keep a positive mindset and continue to strive for the next shot to be our best shot.”

The Tigers just missed out on qualifying for the state championship a year ago, and since then finishing the job has been the team goal.

“They’ve been working for 365 days,” Price said. “They don’t try to sidestep anything and instead they take it head on.”

Price believes that making the championship will allow for each player to enter the event with a loose approach and a go-for-broke attitude.

“We’re going to have fun and as we saw today, anything can happen,” Price said.

Chilton County will be one of four high schools that will compete for the Class 6A State Championship at Hampton Cove Golf Course in Huntsville on May 9-10.
