Parents are joining in the fun of art at Clanton Elementary School.

The school held a family art on April 28 and has another scheduled for May 5.

Organized and led by Julie Harrison, the events offer an opportunity for parents to create pieces of art alongside their children.

Harrison said about 200 people attended the first art night, and about the same number is expected for the second art night.

This is the second year of the effort, which is free and paid for using parental involvement funds.

“This has been such a hit,” Harrison said. “It thrills me to see people who enjoy it.”

The theme for art night is “Under the Sea,” and the school lunchroom has been decorated according to the theme. Harrison has also picked out appropriate music, such as “Surfin’ USA” by the Beach Boys.

The program begins at 5:30 p.m. with attendees viewing students’ artwork that has been displayed in the hallways.

Art is on display during the school day until May 6.

After a welcome and setting supplies, attendees draw, paint with warm colors, paint with cool colors, add details with neutrals and then get together for a group photo.

Harrison will hold a summer art camp from July 11-14 at the Chilton-Clanton Public Library.

Sessions will be held from 8:30-10 a.m. (for students who have completed pre-kindergarten and young kindergarteners), 10:30 a.m. to noon (kindergarten and first grade) and 1-3 p.m. (second through fifth grades).

The $72 fee includes all supplies.
