High school golf teams were given a chance to showcase their skills during a county tournament held at Clanton Country Club on Monday.
As the golf world prepares to turn its attention to The Masters in Augusta, Ga. this weekend, golf squads from Chilton County, Isabella, Jemison and Thorsby battled for bragging rights.
It was the second county event hosted this season at Clanton Country Club.
Chilton County High School won the four-team event with an overall score of 215. Thorsby finished second at 272 followed by Jemison at 277 and Isabella at 310.
The Tigers claimed the top four golfers in the event which helped fuel the team’s success.
“They all work real hard and push each other,” Chilton County head coach Ryan Price said. “They all returned and definitely have it in them if they want to make it through the state this year.”
Bailey Price posted the top individual score in the competition with a 70 while Trey Baker finished second with a 72, Cole Watley finished third overall with a 73 and Nash Cox came in fourth with a 79.
“I had a weak front nine and a stronger back nine,” CCHS junior Bailey Price said. “It took us a minute to get going, but after the first three holes we came on pretty strong.”
Watley and Baker are seniors and have earned scholarships to continue playing golf at Snead State Community College.
Golf is naturally an individual sport. According to Price, it is the relationships and understanding of the team concept that has established a consistency of success within the Chilton County program.
“We love each other to death, but it’s also very competitive,” CCHS junior Nash Cox said. “We congratulate each other and look to give credit where it’s deserved.”
Other notable results included: Trey Vessichio led Isabella with an 86, Tyler Jackson led Thorsby with an 87, Corey Short led Jemison with an 89, Adi Argent of Thorsby and Gentry Scott of Jemison led all girl golfers with a 93 while Madison Sanders of CCHS finished with a 94.
The future of golf in the county was on display as Chilton County seventh grader Carson Watley shot 80. Scott, who tied for the girls lead, is an eighth grader at Jemison.
