On Friday, the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center will hold its fifth Friday sale to raise money for the county’s United Way.
The center has taken part in the fifth Friday sales since 2008, according to Executive Director Terry Collier, during which time all proceeds from the CCEAC’s thrift store sales go toward the Chilton County United Way.
While the fifth Friday sales, which take place roughly four times each year, generate a few hundred dollars, the CCEAC does a variety of work for the county.
In conjunction with the thrift store, the center also offers a food pantry, drug and dental assistance, a disaster relief program and more.
So far this year, the CCEAC has distributed roughly 31,000 pounds of food to help more than 1,700 people in Chilton County.
Further, the dental program has handed out around $6,000 to citizens in need of assistance.
“A lot of people don’t know much about us but, I guess that’s OK,” Collier said. “We just give back to the community.”
While the community service offers a variety of programs to Chilton County residents in need, the fifth Friday sales are dedicated to the benefit of the area United Way.
“The United Way is very active in Chilton County,” said CCUW Executive Director Shelly Mims. “Each year the United Way donates money to assist more than 20 agencies throughout the county.”
At the thrift store, locals can pick up a variety of items including clothing, electronics, books, furniture and more.
Mims noted the good that the thrift store has done for local residents.
“One man came into the store from out of town needing clothes to attend a friend’s funeral,” Mims said. “The ladies in the store were able to assist him. He bought a blazer, slacks, shirt and tie all for $10.”
The thrift store is located at 502 Enterprise Road and is open from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 a.m., though it is closed for lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
