Kids attending a Children’s Art Camp hosted by the Chilton County Arts Council had the opportunity to paint sea creatures on Thursday.

“Use your imagination,” artist Sue Anne Hoyt told the class. “We want you to think big.”

Five students were given varying sizes of cardboard covered with white paint to draw or paint sea creatures.

Hoyt said the art would be displayed at an art show July 16 at the Chilton County Arts Council, located at 703 Second Ave. N. in Clanton.

“There are a lot of really cool fish under the sea, and you can use whatever colors you would like,” Hoyt said.

Artist Scarlett Teel said there would be two more sessions of the Children’s Art Camp next week, with one on July 14 and one on July 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. each day.

“We are hoping to possibly do a collage,” Teel said.

Wesley Smith has attended the Children’s Art Camp for the last several years, and enjoys the opportunity to express herself through art.

“I think it is a lot of fun,” Smith said. “My favorite thing to work with is colored pencils, and I love to draw animals.”

Both Teel and Hoyt are teachers with degrees in fine arts.

The cost per two-hour session of the camp is $12 for CCAC members and $15 for non-members.

Students may join CCAC at the $10 per year student rate. It is not necessary for students to attend all sessions.

Children planning to attend next week’s sessions are required to bring an 18×24 pad of paper heavy enough to handle water media, a small watercolor set, pencils and small sharpener and round point scissors.

“The classes are great because the students can really explore their creativity,” Hoyt said.
