Clanton’s Winn-Dixie store director Jeff Wax wanted to give back to the community in some way.

“I think it is important to build relationships with people in the community,” Wax said. “We have so many people from the community who come and shop in this store, and I think it is always good when we can give back in some way.”

Wax heard about some of the needs at the Chilton County Humane Society and decided to donate 60 bags of 17-pound dog food to the shelter.

“I knew that the shelter had a new director and heard about the needs they were having in trying to get dog food, so I thought it would be something good for our store to donate to them and try to help them out,” Wax said.

Wax presented the donation to Humane Society Director Kimberly Ruck at Winn- Dixie on June 11.

“This means a lot to us,” Ruck said. “We usually don’t get a lot of dog food donations. Typically, we get more cat food than anything so this is wonderful.”

Wax said Winn-Dixie has a history of supporting customers and communities through charitable donations and programs, and hoped the dog food would help facilitate a need the shelter had.

“It was important for us to partner with the shelter and support the good work they do,” Wax said.

With the roughly 1,000 pounds of dog food donated, Ruck said it is the support from the community that makes her job enjoyable.

“It is really great to be able to see people from the community step up and help,” Ruck said.

Ruck said there are always supplies the shelter is in need of including bleach, dog food, puppy food, Dawn dish detergent, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags (regular and contractor size bags), old newspapers and monetary donations.
