This year’s Peach Festival parade will have a new route.

Because of the closure of the intersection of highways 31 and 22 in downtown Clanton for an improvement project, the Clanton City Council approved a new route at its regular meeting Monday.

The parade will begin at the Fred’s shopping center (Park Plaza) parking lot, as it has in previous years.

The parade will proceed west on Fourth Avenue North to Sixth Street, go south on Sixth Street to Third Avenue North, go west on Third Avenue North to Seventh Street, go south on Seventh Street to Jackson Avenue, go east on Jackson Avenue to Sixth Street, go north on Sixth Street to Third Avenue North, go east on Third Avenue North to Fourth Street and end back at the parking lot.

Basically, the route has the parade turning off Fourth Avenue North a block early so that it can avoid the closed intersection, then turning onto Seventh Street North, or Highway 31, a block further south than in previous years.

The council unanimously approved the changed route.

Councilman Jeff Price was absent from the meeting.

The council also passed a resolution to apply for a Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $450,000 to rehabilitate the sewer system in the West End community.

The city’s matching funds would be $241,399, along with the cost of professional engineering and administrative services to implement the project.

A public hearing was held prior to the vote on the resolution.

In other business, the council:

•Waived the permit fee, in the amount of $53,221.76, for the construction of a new hospital.

•Tabled a decision about increasing hours for part-time police officers until more information could be obtained.

•Approved Jeremy Brand and Tommy Austin as full-time employees in the sanitation department, as they have met their 90-day probation period for new hires.

•Approved a motion to limit loaded trucks entering Creekwood Subdivision unless they are permitted to do so by the city. Under the motion, all damages to the subdivision and roads will be assessed to owners of vehicles or the general contractor.

•Approved the minutes from the May 26 meeting.

•Approved paying appropriate bills.
