Chilton County 911 reportedly dispatched 23 calls related to wrecks beginning at midnight on May 22 through 11:59 p.m. on Monday.

Some of the other incidents that occurred in Chilton County over the weekend included:

•A 12-year-old was airlifted to a hospital after an incident with a 4-wheeler on Sunday.

•There was a reported wreck on Alabama Highway 155 near Montevallo with one person ejected from the vehicle on Monday

•There was a wreck on County Road 29 on Sunday where a truck flipped over and entrapped the driver under the vehicle. The driver was transported to a hospital by emergency helicopter.

Increase in statewide traffic fatalities

During the official Memorial Day holiday travel period, which began at 6 p.m. on May 22 and ended at midnight Monday, Alabama State Troopers investigated seven fatal crashes with seven traffic fatalities, compared with the three traffic fatalities Troopers investigated in 2014 during the same 78-hour holiday travel period.

The crashes included one pedestrian, two motorcycles and an ATV, and they occurred in Talladega, Mobile, Lee, Clay, Russell, Tuscaloosa and Wilcox counties.

The two motorcyclists killed were using helmets, but the ATV operator was not, according to a release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

None of the three individuals killed while traveling in vehicles was using a seat belt, the release said. Alcohol involvement is not available as Troopers continue to investigate the crashes. In addition, Marine Patrol Troopers assisted with a drowning May 24 on Lake Jordan in Elmore County.

“One traffic or boating fatality is one too many,” said Col. John E. Richardson, director of the Alabama Law Enforcement’s Alabama Department of Public Safety. “We urge motorists to use seat belts no matter how short the drive. And it is just as important to ensure everyone on a boat has a life jacket. Please help us make this a safe summer.”

While the holiday travel period is over, Troopers will continue to participate in Click It Or Ticket, a national safety campaign promoting seat belts.
