A Calera man facing rape and sodomy charges waived his case to a grand jury in Chilton County on Tuesday.

Barry S. Walsh, 28, who lists an address in Calera, was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

The grand jury in Chilton County meets twice a year, once in February and once in August.

Walsh was arrested March 6 in Chilton County after being originally arrested by the Calera Police Department when he allegedly brandished an assault rifle and threatened Chilton County Sheriff’s deputies who arrived at his home as part of an investigation the morning of March 4.

Walsh faced charges including making terrorist threats and resisting arrest and menacing.

Although no shots were fired when Walsh appeared before the deputies with an “assault rifle,” authorities said there was about a 30-to 45-minute standoff.

At the time of his arrest, authorities said Walsh was “swinging the gun around and making terrorist threats.”

Walsh was eventually tackled, and the Calera Police Department was called for assistance in the situation.

Walsh was arrested by Calera Police and posted a $16,000 bond. He was later released from the Shelby County jail on March 6.

Investigators with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department initially visited Walsh’s home the morning of March 4 to question Walsh regarding a rape case.

Authorities said investigators eventually determined Walsh was the suspect they were looking for in the rape case and charged Walsh with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

Walsh is currently in the Chilton County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

Chilton County District Judge Rhonda Hardesty filed an order late Tuesday denying a request by Walsh’s attorney to reduce his bond.
