With an 11-run lead late in the game, the Maplesville Red Devils had to withstand a six-run rally by the Dallas County Hornets in order to pick up a 17-7 varsity softball win at home on March 13.

A lead off walk by Keyondra Fletcher led to a Hornets run on an error by the Devils on a infield groundball that gave Dallas County an early 1-0 lead.

With the bases full of Red Devils, a single to the right side by Cyana Quimby scored Brinley Carter and Josey Smitherman to make the score 2-1 in favor of Maplesville after one inning of play.

Three walks issued to the Devils led to three more Maplesville runs in the home half of the third inning to make the Red Devils’ lead 5-1 after two innings of play.

Alexis Goggins mowed through the Hornets in the top half of the third inning as she retired the side, all via strikeout.

The Red Devils kept the momentum going in the bottom half of the inning, as three more walks issued to the Devils set up a three-run triple by Goggins to centerfield, extending the Maplesville lead to 9-1.

Again the Red Devil defense retired the Hornets in order in the top half of the fourth inning, while the offense tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning—thanks in no small part to a two-run double by Goggins.

Heading to the fifth inning, Maplesville held a 12-1 lead.

The Hornets got back into the contest in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs to extend the game, as the contest was on the verge of being shortened by the mercy rule. Dallas County added two more in the sixth, to pull within five runs at 12-7.

Maplesville’s offense stepped up in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to close out the rally and the game with a 17-7 win.

Goggins led the Red Devils in all facets of the game with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate including a single, double, triple, walk, stolen base and five RBI.

She also handled the pitching for the Red Devils and pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs, three hits and seven walks, recording nine strikeouts.
