Rape suspect brandishes assault rifle in standoff with police

An incident in Chilton County on March 4 led to the arrest of a Calera man facing rape and sodomy charges.

Barry S. Walsh, 28, who lists an address in Calera, was originally arrested by the Calera Police Department after allegedly brandishing an assault rifle and threatening Chilton County Sheriff’s deputies who arrived at his home as part of an investigation the morning of March 4, Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon said.

Walsh originally faced charges including making terrorist threats and resisting arrest and menacing, Shearon said.

Although no shots were fired when Walsh appeared before the deputies with an “assault rifle,” Shearon said there was about a 30-to 45-minute standoff.

“It could have been really bad,” Shearon said. “He kept swinging the gun around and making threats.”

Authorities eventually tackled Walsh, Shearon said.

Shearon said deputies called the Calera Police Department for assistance in the situation.

“At one point he was making threats to harm an officer,” Shearon said.

Walsh was arrested by Calera Police Department posted a $16,000 bond and was released from the Shelby County jail on March 6.

Shearon said investigators with the sheriff’s department initially visited Walsh’s home the morning of March 4 to question Walsh regarding a rape case.

Shearon said investigators eventually determined Walsh was the suspect they were looking for in the rape case and charged Walsh with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

Walsh is currently in the Chilton County jail on a $75,000 bond.

He has a preliminary hearing scheduled in front of Chilton County District Judge Rhonda Hardesty for March 24.
