The Jemison Panthers softball team took a win in a close contest against Shades Valley on Feb. 28, knocking off the Mounties in the second day of the Homewood Tournament, 2-1.
The two squads squared off in a pitchers’ duel, as the game remained in a scoreless deadlock throughout the first three innings.
The Mounties got on the board first, taking a run in the top of the fourth to go up 1-0.
Jemison failed to answer in the bottom of the inning but was able to keep Shades Valley from adding to its lead in the top of the fifth.
With Jemison down to its last three outs in the bottom of the inning, Madison Moore reached on an error to start off the inning.
Jessica Paschal then followed suit, reaching base on a single to left field to move Moore into scoring position, with Moore reaching third on the single.
A flyout registered the first Panther out of the inning, but a double to right by Hannah Corbin drove in Moore to tie the game at 1-1 and moved Paschal to third.
Paschal was picked off at third for the second out, and Destiny Bailey then stepped into the box with a win on the line, answering the call with a single to right to bring in Corbin and clinch the 2-1 win for the Panthers.
Bailey went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Corbin went 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI.
Paschal tossed five innings, surrendering one earned run on three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
