Verbena boys take down Maplesville

The Verbena girls basketball team played at home Jan. 30 against the Maplesville Red Devils. Maplesville won the contest between the Red Devils squads, 39-26.
Amber Uptain (15 points) was Maplesville’s leading scorer with 10 points coming from the third quarter alone. Kendrauna Griffen (10 points), Alexus Nix (six), Megan Weaver (four), Sha’kea Mitchell (two), and Tydasia Davis (two) also contributed to the victory.
Candice Williams (12) and Janiya White (eight) were Verbena’s leading scorers on the night.
In the boys’ contest, Verbena came out on top in an extremely competitive game, winning 58-48.
With a minute left in the game, Maplesville made a 9-4 point run, including a three-point basket in the final two seconds of the game courtesy of Jeremy Williams. Despite the run, it was not enough to overcome the lead Verbena accrued early in the game, as Verbena won, 58-48.
Juwan Tyus (22 points) was Verbena’s leading scorer on the evening. victory.
Terence Dunlap led Maplesville with 13 points.
