Chilton County High School softball standout Kristina “Kricket” Caton announced her intention to continue her career on the next level on Jan. 20 in a ceremony held in the cafeteria of Chilton County High School.

Caton signed with the Shelton State Buccaneers, where head coach Buddy Boyle praised her ability to play both catcher and middle infield, as well her offensive production.

“With Kricket, No. 1, she’s versatile,” Boyle said. “Secondly, she can swing (the bat). She’s got a little pop.”
Boyle also said that his staff noticed Caton playing travel ball, and decided to follow her.

“You see things in the recruiting process,” he said. “With her, she’s strong already. She already has an athletic base, so you fine tune her motor skills. Our weight training program is geared for people who run, hit and throw.”

In attendance at the signing were Caton’s family, teammates at Chilton County and Shelton State assistant coach Lindsey Skinner.

Caton said she viewed the chance to play for Shelton State as a chance “to show her hard work.”
Caton also said she deliberated before signing, choosing Shelton State after weighing out her options.

“I had three offers, and I looked at records,” she said. “(They’re) a good program with a good record.”

Boyle was quick to praise Caton’s fielding prowess, as well as her ability to lead.

“She’s a pretty good outfielder,” he said. “But with what fits (for us), she’s perfect for middle infield and behind home plate because of her leadership. She’s the only catcher we recruited, and she’s a hybrid. You’re looking at a kid you could put in middle infield (too).”

Caton will begin her senior season Feb. 17 as the Tigers take on the Thorsby Rebels at home.
