Severe weather preparedness items can be purchased in Thorsby without sales tax from Feb. 20-22.

Thorsby’s Town Council voted unanimously at a regular meeting Monday to participate in the sales tax holiday.

State sales and use taxes will also not be charged on eligible items, which will only be those related to severe weather preparedness.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the council voted to change the date of the next regularly scheduled meeting, which would have fallen on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when Town Hall would have been closed.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

In other business, the council:

•Approved an agreement with Southern Light that will allow the company to use town rights-of-way to install an underground fiber optic cable network, along with requests of the company, including a 3-percent franchise fee and internet service provided to the town.

•Heard from Fire Chief Lee Gunn about work performed recently on the department’s newest fire engine so that it could pass a pump test. Gunn also reported a successful “Santa Run.”

•Approved, at Gunn’s recommendation, the hiring of two firefighters: Adam Blow and Kyle Prather.

•Heard from Public Works Director Terry Jackson about issues related to the town’s water and sewer systems. Jackson said recent heavy rainfall has caused pump stations to be overworked, though the amount of rainwater infiltrating the town’s system is higher than it should be and likely indicates a problem somewhere.

•Was provided an activity sheet from November 2014 by Police Chief Rodney Barnett.

•Approved the minutes from the Dec. 1 meeting.

•Approved the paying of bills with the necessary transfer of funds.
