County players named to All-State team

Several area football teams were well represented on the 2014 Alabama Sports Writers Associaton’s All-State football team for Class 1A, as players from Isabella, Billingsley and Maplesville made one of the two squads selected by the ASWA.

In the selection process, players were named by the ASWA to either first or second team honors, with each of the two teams having an honorable mention selection as well.

Maplesville had seven players named to the All-State team, while Billingsley and Isabella each had one player make the squad.

For AHSAA Class 1A state champion Maplesville, quarterback Cole Spencer, running back Terence Dunlap, defense back Kendarius Bradley and linebackers Tyler Armstrong and Will Harrison all earned first team honors.

Spencer finished the year 100-of-158 passing for 2,075 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also rushed for 540 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Dunlap, who was named the AHSAA Class 1A state championship game Most Valuable Player, ran for 1,658 yards on 139 carries for 30 touchdowns, while returning six kickoffs for 248 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Armstrong had 123 tackles, four sacks, 12 tackles for loss and a defensive touchdown; while Harrison had 107 tackles, two sacks, eight tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Defensive back Bradley posted 40 tackles, three interceptions and a touchdown.

Billingsley’s Jaytarius Steele also made first team honors for defensive back. Steele finished the season with 48 tackles, eight interceptions and two touchdowns .

Three area players made second team honors. Maplesville linebacker Corey Hall, athlete Trevor Wallace and Isabella quarterback Tyler Smith were all named to the second team. Wallace made the team as a punter, and Smith as an athlete.
