Alabama State Fire Marshal Ed Paulk said state fire marshals observed problems with exit doors during a routine inspection Aug. 15.

“The building should only be closed long enough for minor repairs to the doors,” Paulk said.

The facility, located off U.S. Highway 31 near Jemison High School, houses a preschool program for children ages 3-5.

Marion Dunlap, executive director of Community Action Agency of Central Alabama, said the facility also received a no-cook order from the fire marshal’s office due to needing a range hood for the stove at the facility.

“Once that part is ordered, we should be able to reopen,” Dunlap said. “We knew that children could not be on site while that part was being ordered, so we just told all of the parents we would be closed this week.”

Dunlap anticipates re-opening the center next week.

There are roughly 38-40 children who attend the center, Dunlap said.

“This is a very temporary thing, and we anticipate completing the repairs later this week,” Dunlap said.
