Clanton city retirees will each receive a one-time, lump-sum payment in October after the city’s council approved the measure on Monday.

Payments would be received by 19 employees, at a cost to the city of $10,485.

The Alabama Legislature passed Act 2014-429, which includes provisions for retirees to receive the payments through the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

The Act provides for each retiree to receive a one-time lump-sum payment of $2 per month for each year of service credited to the retiree’s account or $300, whichever is greater. Also, the beneficiary of a deceased retiree can receive $300.

The payments would be made in October.

In other business, the council:

•Heard from Craig Cleckler with the Chilton County Airport Authority, who updated the mayor and council on improvements at the airport, and thanked them for their support.

•Heard from Jackie Baker, who thanked the mayor and council for their support of the West End Neighborhood Watch.

•Approved the hiring of Derrick Wyatt as a truck driver in the sanitation department to replace Burl Skyles, at the rate of $8.50 per hour and upon results of a drug test.

•Approved the hiring of Brandon Easterling part-time in the beautification department at the rate of $7.25 per hour, upon results of a drug test.

•Approved minutes from the July 28 meeting, and paying of the appropriate bills.
