An afternoon wreck in Jemison near the Interstate 65 southbound on-ramp of Exit 219 resulted in one fatality.

Jemison Police Department and Jemison Fire Department responded to a dispatch call shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday of a “blue car” with a male and female occupant entrapped.

The male in the car was killed on scene, and the female was transported to a hospital by Lifesaver air ambulance.

Details of the wreck were still under investigation as authorities worked the scene Tuesday afternoon.

Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer said based on reports from eyewitnesses at the scene of the incident, it appeared the light blue Buick Lesabre drove directly off the 40-foot embankment after exiting the I-65 southbound Exit 219 and driving across County Road 42.

“It is unclear whether the male individual, who was driving, got off I-65 after traveling southbound and approached the stop sign at the top of the exit without stopping,” Fulmer said. “We don’t know if he just kept going across County Road 42, but we are still working the scene and trying to figure everything out. This was an elderly couple, and you just hate to see something like this happen. It is very, very tragic.”

Details of the wreck were still under investigation as authorities worked the scene Tuesday afternoon.
