Advertiser recognized with Alabama Press Association awards

The Clanton Advertiser won at least 14 awards in this year’s Alabama Press Association contests, for content and advertisements published in 2013.

Seventy newspapers submitted 2,606 entries in the Better Newspaper Contest, which was judged by the West Virginia Press Association.

The Advertiser competes in Category B, against other daily community newspapers.

Thirty-seven newspapers submitted 968 entries in this year’s Advertising Contest, which was also judged by the West Virginia Press Association.

The Advertiser won the following awards in the Better Newspaper Contest:

•First place in “Best In-Depth News Coverage” for ongoing coverage of the closing of Chilton Medical Center and efforts to open a new hospital in Chilton County.

•First place in “Best Business Story or Column” for the story by Emily Etheredge titled “Local farmers and the fresh food movement.”

•Second place in “Best Feature Story Coverage” for the story by Emily Beckett titled “Living history,” about a pair of 100-year-olds in Chilton County.

•Second place in “Best Business Story or Column” for the story by Emily Etheredge titled “Ready, set, grow,” about the potential for economic growth in Chilton County.

•Second place in “Best Sports Single Event Story” for the story by Stephen Dawkins titled “‘One more’ rivalry win for Panthers,” about Jemison High School’s football win over rival Chilton County High School.

•Third place in “Best In-Depth News Coverage” for coverage by Emily Beckett of the remains of a Chilton County resident being returned for burial more than 60 years after his death in the Korean War.

•Third place in “Best Headline” for “Cattle drive,” the headline used with a story about a cow on the loose in Clanton that was corralled and transported in a police cruiser.

The Advertiser won the following awards in the Advertising Contest:

•First place in “Best Regularly Scheduled Special Section” for “Kickoff” high school football preview magazine.

•Second place in “Best Single Ad 1/2 page and under-color” for an ad for real estate agent Debra Hubbard.

•Second place in “Best Signature Page” for a page promoting breast cancer awareness.

•Second place in “Best In-Paper Promotion of Newspaper” for a promotion of Peach Living magazine.

•Second place in “Best Classified Display Ad” for an ad for Ryder.

•Third place in “Best Single Ad over 1/2 page-black and white” for an ad for the city of Clanton.

•Third place in “Best Classified Display Ad” for an ad for JM Tanks.

“We’re excited about these awards,” Managing Editor Stephen Dawkins said. “It’s meaningful to be recognized by peers in the industry, but we will continue to strive toward continually improving all of our newspapers, magazines and websites because that’s what our readers expect and deserve.”

Winners of several additional awards, including Advertising Sweepstakes and General Excellence, the top overall prize, will be announced at the APA Convention Awards Banquet on June 28.
