Awlahjaday Agee was sworn in Monday as Chilton County’s coroner, replacing Randy Yeargan, who has resigned and moved out of state.

Agee was appointed by Gov. Robert Bentley to finish the remainder of Yeargan’s term, which will end with this year’s elections.

Agee will run for the position against Aaron Ellison with Ellison-Cleckler Funeral Home.

The new coroner was sworn in Monday by Probate Judge Bobby Martin in front of many relatives, friends and other supporters. Bishop Keith Moore read a verse of scripture and offered a prayer to begin the ceremony.

The appointment was effective March 11, one day after Yeargan’s resignation was effective.

Agee has served as deputy coroner for 10 years, all of which were with Yeargan as coroner. Agee said he has learned much over that time.

“It’s been a dream of mine for years to serve,” Agee said. “I’m honored and blessed that the governor has seen fit for me to serve the people of Chilton County.”
