Harvest time is approaching, and that means it is time to prepare to preserve those fruits and vegetables.
To do this, careful planning, preparation and knowledge of food safety must be used. Foodborne illness commonly referred to as food “poisoning” is a disease carried by people, food and water. It can occur when foods are improperly canned, cooked, stored and reheated.
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is offering a Canning Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on March 17 at the Chilton County Extension Office.
Attendees will learn about food safety in canning high-acid foods (water-bath canning), canning low-acid foods (pressure canning), and jam and jelly making. Information will be available on pickling, freezing and drying foods.
Food safety will be an important part of this workshop, so canning equipment will be demonstrated. There will also be a live demonstration on water bath and canning methods. Samples will be offered.
If you are interested in attending this workshop or learning more about food preservation, call the Chilton County Extension at (205) 208-6268 to register. The registration fee for this workshop is $5, which will include the Alabama Food Preservation Cookbook and more.
