Council discusses renovations to city-owned shopping center

Clanton’s City Council on Monday approved a short-term fix for a leaky roof at the Park Plaza Shopping Center—and a long-term goal to renovate the center’s exterior.
The city owns the shopping center, which houses Fred’s and Farmers Home Furniture, among others.
The council unanimously (other than Councilman Bobby Cook, who was absent) approved for Mayor Billy Joe Driver to take the steps necessary to prevent leaks from damaging the property.
Councilmembers also said officials should look into completely re-doing the structure’s facade, with input from tenants.
The council also took action on what could soon become another city property.
Driver was given approval to purchase five acres of land in the Lomax community for $30,000 for the installation of a storm shelter.
Regarding yet another city, the Clanton Senior Center, the council voted to rent the facility to those interested for $100 a day, with a $60 deposit.
Driver said the city has been contacted by people wanting to rent the facility, but a policy and rate was not in place.
Renting of the Senior Center would use the same process as renting the city’s Recreation Center, which rents for $75 a day.
The difference in rate was because a city employee would have to be present at all times at the Senior Center because it is connected to other businesses.
In other business, the council:
•Took several actions regarding personnel at E.M. Henry Park. Former director Darrell Bolding was approved to come back on as part-time director, Royce Rogers was changed from part-time director to part-time worker and Henry Witcher’s employment was terminated for insubordination.
•Approved the transfer of an alcohol license from HeadCo to RKGILL Inc., which will operate Friendly Food Mart. The license is for the sale of beer and wine for off-premises consumption.
•Approved the re-hires of Will Arrington, Avery McCarley, Craig Headley, Michelle Harriman, Melanie Harriman, Chance Calloway and Parker White in the Parks and Recreation Department, for part-time summer help.
•Accepted the resignation of Marvin Stockdale from the Clanton Fire Department.
•Approved the minutes from the previous meeting.
•Approved paying necessary bills.
