James Roy “J.R.” Lowery, 96, of Thorsby, passed away Jan. 8 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster.

He was born on Sept. 16, 1917, in Chilton County, the son of the late Houston Manning Lowery and the late Naomi Pate Lowery.

He was a government employee.

Surviving are his daughters, Ramona Lowery Lett of Thorsby, Karen Ann Baker (Everett) of Thorsby, Pam M. Lowery of Thorsby, Myra Lowery of Thorsby; sons, Barry Michael Lowery (Barbara) of Dora, Daniel H. Lowery (Margaret) of Thorsby, Richard L. Lowery of Thorsby, Phillip R. Lowery (Shelby) of Thorsby, Joe W. Lowery of Thorsby, Eric Lowery (Bette) of Jemison, No. 12 son, Verlle Guin (Tina) of Jemison; 15 grandchildren; 15-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Faye Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lowery, son, James Keith Lowery, mother and father, two sisters and a brother.

Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Jan. 9 at Clanton Church of God.

Services will be held Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. at Clanton Church of God with the Rev. Melton Short and the Rev. Billy Boatwright officiating.

Interment will follow in Martin Memorial Cemetery in Clanton.
