Crews worked Monday morning to unload and install a new storm shelter at Higgins Ferry Park.

Aqua Marine Enterprises, Inc., the manufacturer of Safe-T-Shelter safe rooms based out of Danville, installed the shelter at the campgrounds near Lake Mitchell.

The prefabricated shelter or safe room was lifted and placed in the location by a crane. Crews will work to anchor the shelter this week.

A second shelter will also be installed this week in Verbena at 3885 U.S. Highway 31 next door to the Verbena Fire Department.

The shelters meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) standards and will seat roughly 100 people.

Earlier this year, the county received word that the first three shelters were approved for Gov. Robert Bentley’s Emergency Relief Fund (GERF) that gives money to counties to pay the 25-percent match, allowing the first three shelters to be at no cost to the county.

The three shelters under the GERF funding will be in Verbena, Isabella and Higgins Ferry Road.

Currently, the county has seven storm shelters and plans to add 10 more so that each resident in the county is only a 5-minute drive from a shelter.

Crews will work to anchor new shelter at Higgins Ferry Park this week.
