FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Maplesville QB vexes defenses with arm, legs, head
Published 2:34 pm Wednesday, October 16, 2013
Maplesville quarterback Colby Chambers can do it all.
Not only does he deliver timely, accurate passes to the team’s receivers, he helps them line up correctly and run the right routes. He makes sure the offensive linemen know their responsibilties.
And if you haven’t paid attention, Chambers does something you might not expect: He attacks defenses with his legs as well as his arm.
The senior completed five passes in 13 attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown, and rushed 13 times for 100 yards in last week’s 51-25 win over Autaugaville, a team that came into the game unbeaten in region play.
Chambers’ performance earned him The Clanton Advertiser Football Player of the Week honors.
“He does a good job of taking what the defense gives us and making adjustments here and there,” Maplesville coach Brent Hubbert said about his signal caller.
Most of Chambers’ yardage has come off designed run plays. With the Red Devils employing a one-back offensive set most of the time, Chambers serves as the team’s second running threat in the backfield.
Chambers’ area-leading 850 passing yards are remarkable considering the team’s top receiver a year ago graduated, and the second-leading receiver, Damian Mitchell, isn’t even among the team’s leaders this season as he focuses more on running the football.
Chambers has spread the ball around to 14 different receivers, four of which have at least 115 receiving yards.
“That’s what we thought coming into the season, was that we had a good group of kids that could run routes and catch the football,” Hubbert said. “Each one of them brings something different to the table. Colby knows what each one is good at.”
