Sue’s Mart convenience store on Highway 191 in Jemison is currently closed after a fire damaged the store’s structure on Wednesday.
Jemison Fire Chief John Dennis said both Jemison Fire Department and Thorsby Fire Department responded to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. to a fire toward the rear portion of the store’s structure.
“When we arrived on the scene there was heavy smoke and fire showing,” Dennis said. “The structure is still standing but there is pretty significant structural damage.”
Dennis said no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
Authorities are still investigating the reason for the fire, but Dennis said he thinks the fire might have been electrical.
“There is heavy damage to the back of the store,” Dennis said. “If you pulled in and looked at the front of the store you wouldn’t be able to notice anything wrong, but there is pretty bad damage to the back portion.”
Dennis said due to the fire, Sue’s Mart is closed for business and it is unclear when the store will reopen.
