Ready to play: Maplesville’s football team takes the field for the first time of the 2013 season.

The Maplesville Red Devils started out the season by defeating the Winterboro Bulldogs 59-7 on Friday.

Coach Brent Hubbert said he was excited about the win and proud that his team finished the game injury free.

“We had a couple of penalties early on but I can’t say enough about our defense,” Hubbert said. “They played great.”

In the first quarter, senior Colby Chambers scored the first touchdown from the 6-yard line. in the second quarter, sophomore Jerry Nix scored leading the Devils to a 14-0 edge.

Junior Kendarius Bradley caught a pass in the end zone with an 18-yard reception and senior Devonte’ Morrow finished up the second quarter with a 2-yard run touchdown.

Nix started the second half of the game with a second touchdown on 11-yards after senior Damian Mitchell returned the kick off 92 yards. Mitchell scored a touchdown on a three-yard run in the third quarter and Maplesville ended the third quarter with a 30 yard scoring pass from Chambers to Bradley.

Sophomore Zanterius McKenzie started out the fourth quarter with a seven-yard touchdown and eighth grader Nathaniel Watson ended the evening with an eight-yard touchdown.

Winterboro scored a single 40-yard touchdown.

“We are excited about the season and we are just going to continue to work harder,” Hubbert said.
