Two annual events spotlighting Chilton County’s agriculture and business industries will be presented together this year.
The Farm-City Committee is sponsoring the 11th annual Farm, Home and Wildlife Expo on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Chilton Research and Extension Center.
The expo will be the Farm-City Committee’s main project for 2013.
“The committee agreed that the Expo is a perfect way to promote the supporting relationship between farms and cities,” said County Extension Coordinator Gay West. “(The) expo event brings in people from all over Central Alabama to a farm setting and provides educational programs on agricultural topics.”
The expo will be held from 12–5 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
It is an outdoor event and will be canceled if inclement weather occurs. It will not be rescheduled.
The expo will include cooking demonstrations with pies and omelets; water conservation demonstrations using rainwater; robotics demonstrations by LeCroy Career Technical Center students; a goat show with members of local FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapters; skeet shooting; and a variety of sampling stations for fruits such as peaches, kiwi, apples, figs, pears and watermelon.
“It’s educational entertainment,” CREC Director Jim Pitts said of the event. “We’re trying to teach folks something, but we’re trying to make it a way that is hands-on.”
Pitts said the expo would also serve as a celebration of the Farm-City Week program, which was created to bring together the county’s farmers and business people and showcase the importance of both groups to the county’s economic growth.
The Farm-City Committee consists of representatives of the Clanton Kiwanis Club, the Chilton County Farmers Federation, the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce and the Chilton County Extension Office.
A Farm-City Banquet will not be held this year as it has in previous years.
“We are planning on having a booth at the expo with Farm-City information,” West said. “I think you reach out to so many different people [at the expo]. We just thought it would be a great place to get the message out.”
The CREC is located at 120 County Road 756 in Clanton.
