Board of Education approves school requests

At a meeting on May 21, the Chilton County Board of Education awarded LeCroy Career Technical Center’s tractor bid to Clanton Tractor for $17,205 and approved a request to renew bids with Advanced Disposal (formerly Veolia) for garbage pick-up and J&W Communications for computer maintenance.
The board approved to request bids on ceramic tile installation, electrician services and printing of the student/parent information guide.
School requests the board granted were at: Chilton County High (permission for D.J. Promotions to use the auditorium on June 1 for a gospel concert); Maplesville (permission for Vicki’s Dance Studio to use the auditorium for a dance recital on May 28); Bus Shop (permission to hire two helpers this summer to wash and clean up buses at $10 per hour); and Maintenance Shop (permission to hire helpers this summer at $10).
The board voted to allow an English Language Learner (ELL) camp to be held this summer at Clanton Elementary (CES, Clanton Intermediate and Verbena High students), Thorsby (THS, Isabella and Maplesville High students) and Jemison Elementary (Jemison Elementary and Jemison Middle students).
The following employee resignations were approved: Sherry Burcham, Jemison Middle teacher, effective May 24; Sandy Collins, Thorsby secretary/bookkeeper, effective June 1; Brenda Godbold, Jemison Elementary counselor, effective June 1; Sherry Minor, Clanton Intermediate teacher, effective May 24; Holly Price, Clanton Middle teacher, effective May 24; Kristy Rhodes, Chilton County High cafeteria assistant, effective May 24; Nancy Sewell, Jemison Middle teacher and bus driver, effective June 1; Donna Tillery, Jemison Middle secretary/bookkeeper, effective June 1; Patricia E. Tipton, Clanton Elementary teacher, effective May 24; Saleta Williams, Clanton Intermediate teacher, effective May 24; and Brittany Beatty, Chilton County High, effective May 24.
The board approved sending non-renewal letters to: Christina Cochran, Verbena counselor/librarian; Sonja Henley, Clanton Middle Title I teacher; and Teresa Knott, Jemison Elementary counselor/media specialist.
A leave request was approved for Gerald Stamps.
Sheri McKee and Robin Baker were approved as substitute teachers.
In other business from Tuesday’s meeting, the board:
•Heard comments from visitor Aaron Ellison regarding the PALS program at Jemison Elementary for special needs students.
•Approved payrolls and account payables for the month of April.
•Approved the May 21 agenda and minutes from the April 16 meeting.
•Approved the monthly financial statement and bank reconciliations of the Central Office for April as presented by Chief Financial Officer Steve Yeargan.
•Approved Child Nutrition Program requests.
•Approved the class-size reduction annual report.
•Granted the town of Thorsby permission to use the property located in front of Thorsby School on July 3 for the Fourth of July fireworks display.
•Approved for school offices, shops and the Central Office to be closed Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day.
•Granted a Chilton County YMCA bus request for summer camp May 28–Aug. 16.
•Approved for a public safety class to be added to the fall schedule at LeCroy Career Technical Center.
•Recognized horticulture students from LeCroy Career Technical Center for their work on the grounds around the Central Office.
