Mattie Ophelia DeLoach Griffin

Mattie Ophelia DeLoach Griffin, age 90 of Verbena, passed away on May 23, 2012, at Russell Medical Center in Alexander City.

She was born in Chilton County on Feb. 6, 1922, the daughter of the late James Jackson DeLoach and the late Cora Lee Terrell DeLoach.

Ophelia was affectionately known as “MawMaw” by her family. MawMaw was a fantastic cook, known for her mac and cheese, barbecue chicken, and camp stew. She was also a gifted seamstress.

She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Hubert Griffin of Verbena, along with: daughter, Ann (Dewey) Deavers of Clanton; son, Gerald (Donna) Griffin of Clanton; daughter, Joyce (Don) Cochran of McDonough, Ga.; daughter, Kathy (Rick) Owens of Alexander City; daughter, Carol Griffin of Clanton; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; along with a brother, James Jackson DeLoach Jr. of Clanton.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a son, Gary Griffin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 26 at 11 a.m. from the Bethany Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Hoyt Chastain and the Rev. Stephen Vickers officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will follow in the Bethany Missionary Baptist Cemetery in Clanton.
