Quilt drawing to fund scholarships

For about four years, the Chilton County Energizers have helped a Chilton County student go to the University of Alabama and one go to Auburn University.

The Energizers, a group of retired Alabama Power employees, fund each scholarship with money they collect from drawings for Alabama and Auburn quilts.

Chilton County’s Auburn and Alabama clubs select two students each year to receive the scholarships.

People may donate $1 for each time they wish to enter their names in the drawings.

“For each time you want to donate, you will check whether you want Alabama or Auburn,” said Gordon Smelley, Energizers president. “I hope we have good luck with it like we did.”

Energizers member Elaine Williams makes every quilt by hand.

Smelley said students have received as much as $675 from the scholarships.

This year, the drawing will be held Dec. 6. Entrants do not have to be present to win.
